Aleksander "Aleks" Smirnoff was born October 16th 1987 in Santa Cruz. He was the first child born to Boris & Elena Smirnoff. They were young and had recently immigrated to the United States from their homeland of Russia (former USSR) when their son was born. Needless to say, money was in tight supply for the young family. However, Elena was a doting mother to her son and took care of him as best she could.
When Aleks was about three years old, his younger sister, Diana,was born. Although they are different in personality, he's shy and she's extremely outgoing, they love each other very much and have a close relationship. Sometimes, Aleks feels like that she's the only person who truthfully understands him.
As a child, Aleks was often very curious. He liked to explore and play games that are common of children his age. However, due to his strong Russian background, he never could quite fit in with other children his age - His parents didn't speak English as well as the other adults in his neighborhood, the family was often struggling to make ends meet since Boris' job didn't pay that much, and Aleks himself was somewhat unusual. Along with his curiosity, he was sensitive - which caused some conflict in the Smirnoff household during Aleks' adolescence. Boris had always been incredibly masculine, but it seemed that the only thing that Aleks inherited from his father was his commanding height. His other features, like his soft brown eyes and alabaster skin, were directly inherited from Elena. Aleks tried to be the son that Boris always wanted, but he always felt like he could never be good enough.
In order to sort of bring Aleks out of his shell, his mother enrolled him in dance classes. He tried the "traditional" dance styles of ballet and jazz, but he just didn't feel like he fit. One of his teachers suggested that he try hip hop. Once he was enrolled, Aleks felt complete. He felt able to finally break out of his shell. Also while he was there, he met Drucilla Griffin. He'd seen her at school but due to his nerves and timid personality, he had never really talked to her. However, the two developed a friendship and eventual relationship. Aleks knew that this was different for Dru. He knew that she was mostly into bad boys, but he guessed that there was just something about him that brought her into his life.
The two stayed together for around a year until Aleks got the news that his father was to be transferred to Toronto. Aleks hated that he had to leave her since the two had become so close. However, he went with his parents. It wasn't long until the marriage issues that had plagued Boris and Elena's marriage finally came to a head. They divorced in May of this year and Elena moved Aleks and his younger sister back to the states.
After moving back to the US, he reunited with Dru. Their relationship quickly picked up right where it was before he moved to Canada. The two married in March 2009 in a small ceremony with his family and very close friends in attendance. Aleks loves being married, and he loves being a father to his nearly 2 year old daughter, Renae. Also, in order to support his family and the future children that he and Dru hope to have, he is nearly finished with his degree in Business Management Economics at UCSC. Dancing does help pay the bills, and his mother does help out with watching Renae when it's needed, but both Aleks and Dru agree that it's better to have a degree to fall back on if dancing doesn't work out than to not have a safety net at all. |

He hasn't quite decided on his major, but he does know that he doesn't want to graduate with a degree in general studies. Along with this, he also works part-time as a hip hop instructor at the studio that he used to take lessons at.
